A Director Son With a Specific Vision
Every fan has an opinion on which version of Thalapathy Vijay is the best. Some swear by the mass-action hero of Leo or the emotionally loaded Sarkar. Others go back further, to the days when Vijay was one of Tamil cinema's most naturally funny leading men, a performer who could land a joke with the same ease he delivered a punch. It turns out his own son belongs firmly in that second camp.
Jason Sanjay, who makes his directorial debut with the upcoming Tamil thriller Sigma, sat down with Galatta Plus ahead of the film's October 2, 2026 release and was refreshingly candid about what excites him creatively when it comes to his father. According to the Pinkvilla report, he said that Vijay's sense of humour is the quality he enjoys watching the most, and that if he were ever given the chance to direct him, that is the side he would explore.
The Inner Child Vijay's Fans Remember
The observation Jason makes is one that long-time fans will recognise immediately. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Vijay built a devoted following partly on the back of breezy, light-hearted entertainers where his comic timing was front and centre. That easy, boyish charm became a signature, and even in his bigger, heavier productions, a playful moment between Vijay and a co-star or comedian would always land because it felt genuine rather than performed.
According to the interview, Jason put it plainly: "Over time, he stopped playing full-fledged fun and relatable characters. If I ever get a chance to direct him, I will explore that side of my father." It is a remarkably self-aware comment from a debut filmmaker, and it speaks to how closely he has watched Vijay, not just as a son at home but as someone who clearly thinks in terms of performance and character.
Advice From a Filmmaking Family
The conversation also touched on what it means to carry the weight of two generations of cinema. Jason's grandfather, the veteran director-actor SA Chandrasekhar, had simple but pointed advice when his grandson told him about choosing filmmaking: do not show any second thoughts or doubts on set. According to reports, the two did not go deep into the story of Sigma, but that single instruction says a lot. Confidence on set is contagious, and its absence just as much so.
Jason also credited both his father and grandfather for instilling a strong work ethic in him, noting specifically that Vijay has always been known for his punctuality. That particular detail will resonate with anyone familiar with Vijay's reputation on set across decades of productions, from his early collaborations with directors like SA Chandrasekhar himself through to his recent work.
What Sigma Is About
Sigma is not a family project in the literal sense but it is very much shaped by family influences. The film stars Sundeep Kishan as Guru, a rogue treasure hunter and radio host whose life unravels after a betrayal strips him of everything. What follows is an elaborate heist against a Rs 500-crore criminal syndicate led by a character named Kotlapadi Veeraiya Reddy, with Guru navigating shifting loyalties and unexpected complications at every turn.
The cast includes Faria Abdullah, Sampath Raj, Shiv Panditt and Yog Japee, among others. Music is composed by Thaman S, a composer who has built a strong rapport with Tamil and Telugu audiences over many years. The film was scheduled for an October 2 release.
Why Fans Should Pay Attention
Sigma matters beyond being a curiosity about Vijay's son. Directorial debuts from people inside the industry often carry a particular energy, because they come from someone who has absorbed cinema through proximity rather than just formal study. Whether Jason can channel that upbringing into a sharp commercial film is what audiences will judge.
But the vision he has described for a potential Vijay collaboration is genuinely interesting. A future project that peels back the serious exterior and goes back to the warmth and humour that first made Tamil Nadu fall for Thalapathy would be something quite different, and apparently it is already on his son's mind.
