Tamil Nadu Allows 6 AM Theatre Shows, Scene and Mookuthi Amman 2 First to Benefit

Tamil Nadu expands daily show limits to six, starting at 6 AM, giving new releases a level playing field with neighbouring states.

A Long-Awaited Change for Tamil Cinema

Tamil film fans have been frustrated for roughly two years. Ever since early morning shows were banned following a tragic incident outside a Chennai theatre during the January 2023 release of Ajith's Thunivu, in which a fan lost his life, Tamil Nadu had been operating on a restricted four-show schedule beginning at 9 AM. Neighbouring states, including Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, faced no such restriction and continued screening Tamil films from 6 AM. Overseas territories did the same. The result was that by the time the first show began in Tamil Nadu, reviews, reactions and social media verdicts had already flooded in from every other market. For a commercial Tamil film whose opening day buzz can shape its entire box-office run, that disadvantage was real and costly.

Now, that changes. According to The Hollywood Reporter India, the Tamil Nadu government has passed an order allowing theatres to screen newly released films in up to six daily shows, starting at 6 AM and running until 2:30 AM the following day.

What the New Order Actually Means

The revised schedule effectively adds shows to the existing window. Under the previous rules, theatres could run four shows beginning at 9 AM. The new arrangement allows an early morning show and extends the final permitted screening time, giving exhibitors far greater flexibility during opening week, particularly over festival weekends when demand is highest.

The order applies to newly released films during their opening week. Industry bodies, including the Tamil Film Producers Council, Tamil Film Active Producers Association, Tamil Nadu Theatre and Multiplex Owners Associations and Tamil Nadu Active Distributors Association, had jointly raised the issue at a tripartite meeting with the state government, arguing that the existing schedule put Tamil cinema at a structural disadvantage globally. Their case was straightforward: when overseas and neighbouring-state audiences have already seen a film and published their verdicts before a single Tamil Nadu screen has rolled, the state's industry and its audiences both lose.

Scene and Mookuthi Amman 2 Are First in Line

The timing is significant. Suriya's Scene and Nayanthara's Mookuthi Amman 2 are both set to release on November 6, right at the Diwali weekend, and according to reports they will be the first films to benefit from the new schedule. Both are major releases with large fan followings, and a Diwali opening with six daily shows is about as strong a commercial launchpad as Tamil cinema can offer.

The Tamil Film Active Producers Association welcomed the decision in a formal press note, noting that the narrative handicap since January 2023 had genuinely hurt the industry's ability to compete on equal terms. The association also thanked both the Chief Minister and the Minister concerned for a decision that, in their words, enables Tamil cinema to be screened across the world at the same time.

Why This Matters Beyond the Festival Weekend

For fans, the return of early morning shows is about more than just getting into a theatre two hours earlier. It is about being part of a shared, simultaneous experience. The electric atmosphere of a 6 AM first-day-first-show, fans in full celebration mode, theatres crackling with anticipation, is something genuinely unique to Tamil film culture and something the Thunivu tragedy temporarily took away. The government's decision also comes in the same week that the Tamil Nadu administration reportedly granted subsidies to more than 200 film producers, suggesting a broader effort to support the industry.

As Tamil cinema heads into one of its biggest festive weekends, the restored early morning slot gives both films and audiences the chance to meet on equal footing with the rest of the world, right from the opening bell.
